Entertainment by the Hour

In acupuncture we can tell which organs need help by noting the specific times that symptoms flare up. Think of the twelve organ meridians having two hours throughout the day, every day, to flaunt their talents on stage. If they are not healthy, they trip and expose their weaknesses.

The Organ Clock, showing the time each meridian holds its spotlight, is as follows:

Lung 3-5 am
Large Intestine 5-7 am
Stomach 7-9 am
Spleen 9-11 am
Heart 11 am - 1 pm
Small Intestine 1-3 pm
Urinary Bladder 3-5 pm
Kidney 5-7 pm
Sanjiao 7-9 pm
Pericardium 9-11 pm
Gall Bladder 11 pm - 1 am
Liver 1-3 am

For instance, someone with a weak Lung Meridian, perhaps nursing a great sadness, will often wake up, cough, sweat, and/or itch between 3-5 a.m. Someone with a weak Liver Meridian, perhaps harboring anger or not getting enough rest, may find they have muscle spasms, cramps, or trouble going to sleep between 1-3 a.m. Someone with hormonal imbalances or a weakened Sanjiao Meridian may have more palpitations or hot flashes between 7-9 p.m.

My own munchies act up between 5-7 p.m., the Kidney Hours. When I deplete my Kidney Energy with too much worry or too little water, all my defenses are down in this time period, when I want to eat every creamy, bread-y, grainy thing in sight. (The worrisome Kidney person loves salt, too.)

To reverse these symptoms, we can work on the specific organ meridians to bring them back to full strength. There are also acu-points on each organ meridian specific for healing hourly weaknesses. As the meridians become stronger, symptoms disappear. As we become healthier, we don't even notice all the onstage commotion of our body meridians' talent show. Everything is running smoothly, and the show goes on and on.
