Atlanta's Contact Improv Weekly Jam
*We spend alternate Tuesdays in alternate spaces -- ask to be on the Contact Improv e-mail list to keep informed! First Existentialist Congregation of Atlanta "Contact improvisation is a dance form that has been described as an 'art sport.' It involves sharing weight, rolling, lifting, flying, finding one's center, exchanging weight, feeling one's partner's center, moving with momentum, focusing, and playing. It is duet form most often, but can be solo or trio. It is a total workout for body and spirit." -- Atlanta dancer Susan Keller "Contact Improvisation is a dance form where two partners maintain contact of body surfaces -- the shelves and ledges of the back, front, sides, hips, shoulders, and head. The giving and sharing of weight is essential to Contact, which often involves partners lifting and rolling over each other. In Contact Improvisation you entrust your full weight to another but are always ready to fall, to roll to the floor; the bottom line is that you have responsibility for your own weight and safety. The beauty of Contact is in the effortless conversation of two connected bodies in motion -- more than anything else, it is about listening." -- Louise Runyon, Atlanta dancer/choreographer, ww.louisemorganrunyon.com. "I love contact improv for its movement, pure fun, and the impact it has on our emotional lives. The intense physical intimacy teaches us about trust and creating boundaries. We learn to stay in the moment to better sense our partner’s intent. We learn to gently extract ourselves from partnerships that no longer work. We learn to say goodbye to a partner in the midst of an exhilarating duet. We learn to support another person without hurting ourselves. The lines between dance and life blur." -- Sandra M. Yee, writer, healer & contact improv fanatic
